Making the Private Public: Private Archives and Their Public Lives

Fri Oct 23 14:53:00 CEST 2026

We invite you to join the online seminar Making the Private Public: Private Archives and Their Public Lives, which will explore how personal archives, family photographs, diaries, cookbooks, and other forms of private creative expression become part of our shared cultural heritage.

The seminar will provide a space to discuss why we return to private archives, what stories they bring back to life, and what questions arise when they are made public — from privacy and copyright concerns to new possibilities for historical and literary research.

The keynote presentation will be delivered by Hoda Elsadda (The Women and Memory Forum, Cairo). It will be followed by a roundtable discussion featuring our colleagues Giedrė Šabasevičiūtė and Adéla Provazníková. The discussion will bring together perspectives from the fields of literature, history, and the arts.
The event is part of the fourth seminar in the Paper Bonds project, carried out within the Czech Academy of Sciences–CNRS TANDEM programme in collaboration with partner institutions.

Date: October 25, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. (Cairo time)
Location: Center for Economic, Legal, and Social Studies and Documentation (CEDEJ), Cairo, and online (register via Zoom)
The seminar will be held in English.
