Zbyněk Mucha, PhD.


As a Junior Research Fellow on the MyGRACE research team, Zbyněk Mucha focuses on on Euro-Islamic transnational space and examines migration networks’ influence on contemporary migration patterns. His research centres on South Asia, especially Bangladesh, and addresses postcolonial continuities in migration governance, labour recruitment, diaspora formation and migration diplomacy.

He completed his PhD in History and Asian Studies at Charles University in Prague. His doctoral research analysed the historical continuity of the role of native migration brokers in facilitating labour migration from Bangladesh to Central Europe. He also holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in Indian Philology, specialising in Bengali.

Before joining the Oriental Institute in 2025, as a PhD researcher, he held research awards and received scholarships at the University of Alberta, the University of Trento and the University of Vienna. He was awarded a scholarship by the Sylff Association (The Tokyo Foundation) for study at the University of Oxford, the University of Bonn, as well as to conduct research at the University of Warsaw.

His research has been published in Population, Space and Place, New Perspectives: Interdisciplinary Journal of Central & East European Politics and International Relations, and Nový Orient.
