Identity Politics and Democratic Backsliding in Southeast Asia and Beyond

The Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, with the support of the Strategie AV21 programme, cordially invites you to a seminar exploring the role of identity politics, religious and ethnic mobilisation, and nationalist rhetoric in contemporary Southeast Asia.

The seminar will examine how identity politics both reflects and contributes to the erosion of democratic institutions. Particular attention will be paid to developments in Indonesia, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Bangladesh, placing these cases in comparative perspective alongside similar trends in other democracies under strain across Southeast Asia and beyond.
